This website is a portfolio of my new work in clay. After a 8-10 year hiatus from clay and exploring Botanical Illustration, taking Bass Guitar lessons and playing occasionally with a jazz trio, I have returned to my true love and driving force for most of my life, CLAY.
This work is completely unlike my previous work in ceramics and references the scuba diving, musical, and botanical influences absorbed during my hiatus. Indeed, this body of work is made mostly off the potters wheel and uses hand building techniques centered around using coils. As a clay artist since my early teens, I was completely enamored and obsessed with the potters wheel. At no time, since that time have I ever considered working with coils or making pinch pots. A brief encounter 8 years into my hiatus in a $15 dollar, 4 week, intro to ceramics class that I signed up for as a lark at a local art center triggered my return to clay. The passion, the love, the exploration of new ideas, ways of working, and the joy of creativity hit me like a bolt of lightning. The universe said, “Welcome back, Richard.”
